Most founders treat Hacker News as a launch venue. You post a Show HN, you get a spike, the spike ends, and you go back to whatever you were doing.
The launch is the least interesting thing on that site. The comment threads are where engineers describe their stack, complain about what they are paying for, and ask the room what to use instead. If you sell to developers or technical buyers, that is a smaller audience than Reddit with a much higher concentration of people who can approve a purchase.
It is also the least forgiving audience on the internet for anything that smells like marketing. Both facts matter.
Where the intent actually is
Four thread types are worth watching. The rest is reading material.
Ask HN threads asking for recommendations are the clearest signal on the site. Someone describing their constraints and asking what people use is doing your discovery call for you in public. These threads move fast and they are the reason to have alerts at all.
Comment threads on competitor launches are underrated. When a tool in your category posts a Show HN, the comments fill with people saying what it is missing, what they currently use, and what would make them switch. You do not need to comment at all to get value here. It is the best free competitive research available.
The monthly recurring threads are a slower, steadier source. The hiring thread tells you which companies run which stack, which is a targeting list. The “what are you working on” thread surfaces people building things adjacent to your product.
Complaint threads about pricing or reliability at incumbent vendors behave like Reddit complaint threads, with a more technical vocabulary and a lower tolerance for opportunism.
Monitoring it without drowning
Hacker News has no built-in alerting, and the volume on any general term is unusable. “Python” or “monitoring” will bury you within a day.
Two things make it workable.
Use the Algolia-powered search behind the site rather than the default interface. It supports proper filtering by date and by item type, and it exposes an API and RSS, which is what you actually want to wire into Slack. Filtering to comments only, sorted by recency, on a narrow phrase is the setup that works.
Track phrases, never single words. “alternative to” plus a competitor name. “we are moving off”. “what do you use for” plus a specific task. The volume drops to something a person can read, and the precision goes up enough that you will still be reading the alerts next month.
Accept that this stays semi-manual. Hacker News has a fraction of Reddit’s volume, so the manual approach remains viable here far longer than it does elsewhere. That is a reasonable division of effort: run Hacker News on saved searches and RSS, and automate the Reddit side where the volume genuinely exceeds what a person can scan. Speed matters more here than almost anywhere
Ask HN threads rise on early engagement and fall quickly. A thread that has slipped off the front page is effectively closed, whatever the timestamp says. A comment added after that lands somewhere nobody scrolls.
Practically this means checking your feeds in the morning and again mid-afternoon, and treating a good Ask HN thread as something you drop other work for. There are not many of them. Missing one costs more than a day of general monitoring gains.
How to comment without getting flagged
Hacker News readers detect marketing language faster than any other audience, and the flagging is community-driven, so you do not get a warning. You get silence.
Lead with the technical answer and make it specific. Name the actual constraint, the actual failure mode, the actual number if you have one. Vague helpfulness reads as setup for a pitch, because it usually is. If you can only speak in generalities about a technical problem, you are not the right person to answer that thread.
Disclose plainly and early. “I work on a tool in this space, so weigh that” in the first line, not buried at the bottom. Burying it is the thing that turns a mild self-interest disclosure into an accusation of astroturfing.
Recommend the alternative when the alternative is better. Including the open source one, including the do-nothing option. On Hacker News this is not a sacrifice, it is the single most reliable way to be found credible, and the credibility is what makes the one time you do recommend your own thing land.
Never post a link with no substance. It gets flagged in minutes and it damages the account.
Do not argue with the top critical reply. Answer it once, factually, and stop. Threads where a founder relitigates every objection are a recognizable genre and they end badly.

Will I get banned for mentioning my product?
Not for mentioning it in a genuinely useful comment with disclosure. Accounts get flagged for link-only comments, repeated undisclosed promotion, and voting rings. The failure mode is almost always volume without substance.
How fast should I reply to an Ask HN thread?
Within the first hour or two if you can. After the thread drops off the front page, additional comments get very little exposure regardless of quality.
Is Show HN worth it if I already launched?
A meaningful new capability can justify a second Show HN. A redesign or a pricing change cannot, and posting one anyway is a good way to get a thread you would rather not have.
Can I automate Hacker News monitoring?
You can wire the search API or RSS into Slack, which is worth doing. Automating the replies is not, and it is much more visible here than elsewhere. Read the thread yourself before writing anything.
